Screw Conveyor

CYprocess screw conveyors — also called auger conveyors or helical conveyors — move powders, granules and small lumps with a rotating helical flight inside a tubular or U-trough housing. They run horizontally, on an incline or vertically, and accept multiple inlets and outlets along one casing.

Overview

About Screw Conveyor

How this equipment works in powder handling lines and what to consider when selecting it.

Working principle

As the screw shaft turns, the weight of the product and its friction against the casing stop the bulk from spinning with the flight, so material advances along the trough like a nut on a rotating bolt. Solid, ribbon and paddle flights are selected for the material, and long machines use intermediate hanger bearings.

Tubular, U-trough and shaftless

Tubular screws fully enclose free-flowing powders and small granules. U-trough screws open along the top for higher rates, mixed products and easy cleaning. Shaftless designs remove the centre shaft to open the flow path for sticky, wet or stringy material, with wear liners protecting the casing.

General specifications

SeriesLS tubular · LS U-trough · Shaftless · Vertical (custom)
OrientationHorizontal / inclined / vertical
Typical lengthUp to about 60 m, hanger-bearing dependent
Capacity classFrom under 1 m³/h to about 70 m³/h (see model range)
Product temperatureTypically up to about 200 °C on standard builds
ConstructionCarbon steel / stainless; wear liners for abrasive or shaftless duty
DriveGear motor / reducer; VFD optional
Listed diameters108 - 426 mm tubular (LS100 - LS400); 200 - 500 mm U-trough (LS-200U - LS-500U)
Listed pitch90 - 385 mm on tubular models; 180 - 480 mm on U-trough models. Pitch is fixed per row in the model table.
Listed capacity bandsAbout 0.8 - 37 m³/h tubular and about 3 - 70 m³/h U-trough, at the speeds in the table, for free-flowing powder
Vertical liftStandard vertical screws are typically considered up to about 8 m. Above that, compare a different conveying method.
InclinationTable capacities are not steep-incline ratings. As the angle rises, fill falls and a larger diameter or a lower rate is required.

FAQ

Screw Conveyor FAQ

Common questions about selection, integration and quotation.

Tubular screws fully enclose the product, which suits free-flowing dry powders and small granules and keeps dust and moisture out. U-trough screws open along the top, giving higher rates, easier cleaning and better access for mixed or mildly sticky products.
